text walking (on Main Street)

text walking still for website

This video poem began on Monday, April 7th, 2014 when I decided to head over to Main Street to do some text walking. For a few hours I slowly walked along Main from Broadway towards 28th Street, up the west side of the street and then back down along the east side of the street, gathering words and pieces of text by photographing them with my phone.

I began to wonder if I might be able to feel out and write a poem from some of the words that I gathered. Because I wanted the final piece to convey a sense of my walking and path, I decided to work with the words in the order in which they appeared on my route. I also wanted to try using only the words I found and photographed, although I did end up allowing myself a few minor tweaks (a ‘d’ here, an ‘s’ there and an additional ‘the’, ‘with’, and ‘my’) but only because they seemed necessary.

The completed (4 min. 2 sec) video poem is posted on Vimeo and can be viewed at the following link: https://vimeo.com/101675395
